MARGAO: Noted Konkani writer, linguist, teacher and a recipient of Sahitya Akademi award Dr Madhavi Sardesai passed away on Monday. She was 53 and is survived by husband Raju Nayak (Editor of Lokmat) and two daughters – Asavari and Aditi.
Madhavi’s mortal remains has been kept at the residence of her brother, MLA Vijai Sardesai for the people to pay their last respects. The mortal remains will be taken to her husband’s house at Comba on Tuesday morning before the last rites at Margao at 11 am.
Sardesai had received the Sahitya Akademi award for her book Manthan, a collection of critical essays written in Konkani language. A professor in the Konkani department of Goa University, Dr Sardesai was ailing for some time now.
Besides the Sahitya Akademi award for her book Manthan, Madhavi had earlier received a translation award of Sahitya Akademi for a book on Mahatma Gandhi.
She was a popular figure in the literary and cultural circles and was also a poet.
While paying tributes to her, Konkani writer Dilip Borkar said that Goa has suffered a huge loss in Madhavi’s death. “She had done a lot of study on Konkani language. It is time that the younger generation should emulate her and take her works to its logical conclusion. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.
Artist Dr Subodh Kerkar said that Madhavi was an ever-smiling person and will be missed in the literary field in the State.
Rich tributes were also paid by writer and thinker Datta Naik, Madhav Borkar even as a large number of people paid their respects to the departed soul, including personalities from the literary and political field.
