MARGAO: The old South Goa district Collectorae was converted into a makeshift barracks for the Maharashtra reserve police requisitioned by the State government for the upcoming Lusofonia games.
Dozens of Maharashtra registered police vehicles descended on the commercial capital, transporting around 360 Maharashtra police personnel to the State for the bandobast duties during the games. The vehicles parked outside the old Collectorate building initially conveyed the impression that the police personnel have arrived in the state for bandobast duties in view of the Sunday’s rally of BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi.
The police, however, clarified that the Maharashtra police personnel have landed in the State for the ensuing Lusofonia games. District police chief Shekhar Prabhudesai informed that the Maharashtra police will be deployed only for Lusofonia games and has got nothing to do with Modi’s visit to the state. “The police personnel will be stationed at the old district Collectorate till curtains come down on the Lusofonia games,” SP Prabhudessai said.
The spacious old Collectorate has come in handy for the district authorities to convert the building into a makeshift barracks for the police personnel. It will be only after curtains come down on the games that the administration will allot the vacant space in the old Collectorate for various government departments, including the South Goa Zilla Panchayat office.
