PANJIM: Although the indictments in two of the three police-drug nexus cases are yet to be filed, the CBI is carrying out fresh in-depth investigation into the cases by seeking details from the House Committee’s findings on drugs, which has named ex-Home Minister Ravi Naik and his son Roy in the lethal nexus report.
The Goa Legislative Assembly had furnished the report to CBI soon after it was tabled on the floor of the House in October 2013 but the annexures were missing. Just recently, the investigating officers have written to Assembly Speaker Rajendra Arlekar asking for the annexures.
“Our probe into the case was based on the findings of the report after it was tabled in the Assembly. But since the annexures as mentioned in the report was not furnished to us we have sought for these as well,” an officer said.
The committee headed by MLA Francisco Mickky Pacheco had named the father-son as involved in the drug-trade, a claim which was rubbished by the Naik family. Some names of police officials were also included.
The CBI has been regularly updating its higher ups in New Delhi in connection with the investigation. The Goa unit which is without a head, after the retirement of CBI Superintendent Prem Kumar on November 30, 2013, is expected to get a replacement by January 15.
The agency is investigating three different cases related to drug nexus involving a dozen policemen and two Israelis – Yaniv Benaim alias Atala and Dudu. One of the three cases involving suspended police sub inspector Sunil Gudlar. With regards to the charge sheeting of the remaining two cases, CBI has extended its deadline at least thrice.
