PANJIM: The Union Shipping Ministry has asked Indian Navy and coastal security forces to strengthen their security infrastructure along all the ports of all the states including Goa, to fend off any potential terrorist attack.
The directive becomes crucial as the tourism season has already commenced in the state, with December set to attract maximum tourists.
The security forces have also been asked to make security clearances mandatory while carrying out port expansion or development including construction of new jetties. State has two ports ~Panjim port and Mormugao Port Trust.
The directions were issued during the recently held 15th Maritime States Development Council meeting, chaired by Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan at Bangalore. Captain of Port James Braganza represented Goa at the meeting, which had 20 point agenda.
Braganza said that threat to coastal areas and vital installations, including ports, remains high in view of the security situation in and around India’s immediate neighbourhood.
