ANJUNA: Ten cars, two buses and the protective glass of a statue were damaged by a deranged man in Anjuna and Assagao on Wednesday night.
The accused, Nirdosh Kundaikar, has been arrested in this connection.
According to reports, the accused went on rampage and smashed the glass at the statue of Ven Agnelo de Souza, the windscreen of the Bal Rath bus of Sacred Heart of Jesus High School (Anjuna), lamps at St Michael Church, Anjuna and the windscreens of about 10 cars.
He is also reported to have damaged another Bal Rath bus of the Assagao Union High School in Assagao.
Parishioners of Anjuna were in for a rude shock when they entered the church compound for daily mass on Thursday morning, when they saw the toughened glass covering the statue of Ven Agnelo de Souza broken into pieces.
They were also outraged to see the front windscreen of the Bal Rath bus of Sacred Heart School broken with the help of a pole and the damaged focus lamps used for playing badminton, etc, in the church compound.
The parishioners raised an alarm and St Michael Church (Anjuna) Parish Priest Fr Thomas Gonsalves filed an FIR with Anjuna police, who rushed to the site and took stock of the situation.
The parishioners initially thought it was the handiwork of some communal elements in Anjuna village, in a bid to create communal tension in the area.
The parishioners were then alerted of similar incidents elsewhere in Anjuna and Assagao.
Anjuna Police initially detained Kundaikar on charges of suspicion and he was later arrested when the incidents of property damage were reported by various heads of institutions and individuals at Anjuna and Assagao.
