A young man, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, slipped and fell into the sea at Anjuna Rock Beach late on Wednesday night, triggering a massive search operation by locals, police and fire brigade personnel.
According to eyewitnesses, the man was sitting on the rocks when he lost his balance and plunged into the rough waters. Despite immediate efforts by hotel staff and local residents to rescue him, the attempt failed due to high tide and poor visibility.
The Mapusa Fire Brigade and Anjuna Police later reached the spot and launched a search operation, which was still underway at the time of going to press. Local residents Rohan Gadekar and Lester Dsouza were among those who actively assisted in the search, while hotel staff used torches to aid the operation.
Speaking to the media, Gadekar expressed concern over the state of the area. He pointed out that despite the government spending crores on beautification, including the installation of street lights, the site is being misused. He alleged that groups of youths frequently gather there at night to consume alcohol, break bottles and litter the area.
Gadekar has urged Anjuna Police to step up night patrolling to ensure safety and maintain cleanliness at the popular beach spot.
