Mandrekar stoutly defended government decision

MARGAO: Panchayat Minister Dayanand Mandrekar on Wednesday stoutly defended the government decision to hold the ensuing Zilla Panchayat polls on party lines, even as he said that the election code of conduct will come any time before February 17 since election process for the ZP polls needs to be completed by March 17.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a foundation stone laying function at Davorlim village on Wednesday, Mandrekar said the decision was taken taking into account the instability at the Panchayat raj institutions.
Mandrekar, however, said that though elections will be held on party lines, he cannot say for the moment which party or group will emerge as the ruling groups at the ZP bodies. “It is a good decision of the government to hold ZP elections on Party lines. This will do away with the instability at the grass root bodies”, he said.
