Manohar Parrikar Sports Complex at Sanvordem remains non-operational for more than a year

Quepem: More than year has passed since the inauguration of late Manohar Parrikar Sports Complex, but this facility hasn’t been made available for the use of locals.

This complex is in closed condition and currently illegal activities happening in it at night time. Due to the lack of maintenance, the sports complex is in poor condition.

“It is unfortunate that sports complex which is named after former Chief Minister of Goa, late Manohar Parrikar, is completely neglected by the government authorities,” a youth from Sanvordem said.

According to the local people, this sports complex set up after spending lakhs of rupees. But since it is lying unutilised, one can see vehicles parked illegally in front of the facility and waste materials are dumped in front of this beautiful sports complex.

“This situation is becoming worse by the day due to lack of attention by the Panchayat,” another local youth said.

Speaking on this issue, local panchayat member Nilesh Tari said, “As a local panch member, I am receiving frequent complaints about this issue and we have reported it to the responsible office. But there is no action yet. It has become place for illegal activities and complaints are frequently coming about this situation from local villagers.

Also, this sports complex, which was inaugurated one and a half years ago, the condition of this complex has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance and cleanliness for one and a half years.

Nilesh Tari, a member of the local panchayat, told reporters that the facility is in a bad condition due to lack of maintenance for last one-and-a-half years and demanded that the government needs to look into the future of this sports complex as soon as possible.

“If attention is not paid, this sports complex will turn into a dump yard in future,” Tari said.

Former Sarpanch of Sanvordem Panchayat and present panch member, Sanjay Naik said, “After trying hard for many years, this sports complex was finally constructed and inaugurated few months later. The sports complex was subsequently handed over to Sports Authority of Goa (SAG). But we are saddened that it has not started yet. We hope that the complex becomes operational at the earliest.”

Panchayat member Sanjay Naik said that the local panchayat has taken congnizance of the matter. He added that even local MLA Ganesh Gaokar is continuously following up on the matter and we expect the operations to start as early as possible.
