rnThere was water everywhere on Tuesday, but pipes ran dry in many parts of the Commercial Capital today.
rnFor the second time in less than a week, many areas of the city on Tuesday went without potable water following a leakage in a main water pipeline at Gogol.
rnThe water leakage was detected around 4 pm on Monday, and work on plugging the leakage was still going on at the site. PWD officials told Herald late this evening that water supply will be restored to the affected areas only past midnight or early Wednesday morning.
rnFollowing a leakage in the 600 mm Pre-stressed Concrete pipeline, areas such as Vidhyanar, Aquem, Malbhat, Colmorod, Kharehand, and Sirvodem went without water supply today.
rnIncidentally, this is the second time that these areas were hit by water scarcity following problem with the ageing pipeline.
rnPWD officials in private admitted that the ageing underground water pipelines need immediately replacement as the pipes have outlived their utility. In the instant case, a senior PWD official said the Pre-Stressed Concrete pipeline has been proposed for replacement, adding that the work might be carried out under the JICA project.
rn“Most of the pipes supplying water to the city need replacement. They have indeed outlived their utility”, remarked a senior PWD Official.
