MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) during a special joint meeting on Thursday resolved to hold a site inspection of the Tar River.

The meeting convened by MMC chairperson Shubhangi Vaingankar was attended by local MLA Joshua D’Souza, chief officer Clenn Madeira, vice chairperson Chandrashekhar Benkar, councillors, officials of PWD, WRD, Captain of Ports, Highway and residents.

The Council deliberated on Tar River contamination and pollution on account of the discharge of waste and sewage.

It was decided to form a five-member committee to hold a joint site inspection of the river and later decide on the further course of action.

The locals suggested that the tree cover along the river should be cleared first. They alleged that due to the dumping of mud and concrete into the river by the highway contactor on account of the highway work led to water diversion.

The meeting also suggested the installation of biotoilets as a temporary provision to stop the release of sewage into the nullah as most houses located near the river have no soak pits and are directly connected to river and nullah.
