Margao civic body to impound stray cattle, if found on streets/footpaths

MARGAO: Taking serious note of stray cattle menace, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes warned owners that their cattle will be impounded and sent to gaushalas, if found on the streets or on footpaths within the civic body’s jurisdiction . The town residents including senior citizens who walk along the municipal garden footpath, early mornings and late evenings complained to the Chief Officer about the stray cattle menace and the presence of cow dung on footpaths. Taking serious cognisance of complaints, the CO appealed to the owners of these cattle to take care and not allow these animals to roam on Margao’s streets, especially along the municipal garden area. The CO has warned the owners that these cattle will be impounded and sent to gaushalas. He informed that a resident complained that he saw a MMC sweeper removing dung using a newspaper.

When MMC can penalise shopkeepers for encroaching on footpaths and passages, why can’t they penalise the owners of these stray cattle, the residents questioned.

The CO said the residents fear that someone may slip and fall due to the presence of cow dung along the entire garden footpath.

“Footpaths and passages are meant for people and have to be maintained “, he added.
