MARGAO: Citizens who made the trip to the Margao Municipal Council for various errands on Monday were in for disappointment as there was a breakdown of the civic body’s internet services, forcing many to return home with their work incomplete.
MMC officials are however hopeful that internet service will be restored by Tuesday.
Even as dozens of people waited in long lines at different counters in the heat, confusion prevailed as the staff manning these counters had no clue about how to restore the internet connection.
Comnet, the internet service provider, was called in later. The technician checked the system and stated that there was a problem with the switch, and that it needed to be replaced.
“This type of breakdown has become a regular feature of the Margao municipality. Today, internet services were down and as a result many citizens were disappointed,” said Savio Coutinho, former Chairperson of the MMC. “As per my knowledge, nobody in the municipality is aware about the next step pertaining to restoration of the internet service. However, the people continue to face hardships,” he lamented.
He also alleged that the civic body does not have an annual maintenance contract with the agency providing the internet services.
MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar countered that the civic body was helpless as this was purely a technical fault, and that they were working hard to restore the connection. “A team from Panjim is already at work and found that one part of the circuit has been damaged. The damaged part will be replaced by Tuesday and the internet services will be restored thereafter,” said the Chairperson.
