MARGAO: A lawyer from Margao on Friday filed a fresh complaint before the Judicial Magistrate First Class with regard to the use of formalin to extend the shelf life of fish as the earlier petition filed by him was withdrawn on October 17, 2018.
The earlier complaint has been withdrawn as FDA Director Jyoti Sardessai was made a party to it, and according to the petitioner, she has now emerged as an accomplice in the matter; she, therefore, had to be dropped as a party.
The fresh complaint is filed against the State of Goa, the Superintendent of Police South, Fatorda Police Station Inspector and Iva Fernandes from Food and Drug Administration whose report clearly states that formalin was present in the samples tested from the 17 trucks at Margao on July 12, 2018.
The complainant pointed out that presence of formalin in the samples was established even by the senior scientific officer in his report in the evening, though he did say that formalin was within permissible limit.
The advocate pointed out that formalin is not permitted by Food Safety Standards and also quoted an official statement wherein it is stated that formalin use in fish is not permitted.
The complainant has prayed to the court to direct the Fatorda Police Inspector to register an FIR, investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book.
