MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council’s plan to commence segregated waste collection from door to door suffered a setback, as neither the bins have arrived nor has the educative material been delivered. The plan is now likely to be launched in a fortnight.
MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai said that the council is ready and the staff is all geared up to collect segregated waste however, admitted that while the plan is ready it could not be implemented on Friday due to some problems.
“The pamphlets to be distributed to the houses, stickers, banners and audio visual presentation that have been planned to create awareness amongst the people have not yet been received and hence we have not been able to go to the people”, she admitted.
As per the MMC plan, until around 11 am the waste dumped by the neighbouring villagers at the 37 hot spots identified will be collected and taken to Sonsoddo. Post the transportation, the collection of waste from households will commence.
“The dry and wet waste will be transported separately and that is why the colour code is introduced to identify from where mixed waste is coming,” said Dr Babita while appealing to the people to co-operate.
Rupesh Mahatme pointed out that due the delay in arrival of material the councilors have not yet gone to the households informing them how to segregate the waste.
MMC has ordered 25,000 bins of 10 litres capacity to be distributed to each house and these have not yet arrived. Besides, over 1000 bins of 240 litres, 120 litres and 50 litres capacity that were ordered have also not arrived yet.
The 25 wards of MMC have been divided into 5 zones with each zone given a specific colour and the garbage from the zone will be picked up with the same coloured vehicle and each zone has been provided one compactor along with one open truck or two rickshaws which will have the same colour.
“Workers have been assigned to each ward and they will carry a badge along with a number so that it becomes easy to identify where the waste has come from. If there is mixed waste coming, by looking at the vehicle we shall know from where it has come and accordingly take corrective measures,” said Gaurav Pokle who is assisting MMC in the garbage management.
