MARGAO: Margao councillors, at a meeting to discuss the Shigmo festival on Thursday, expressed anger and got into heated arguments over the govt’s decision to mediate the festival preparations through the MMC. The Shigmo parade will be held in Margao on March 27.
Incidentally, there were two Shigmo parades in Margao last year: one by the Damu Naik-led committee and the other by the Digambar Kamat-attached committee.
The chief officer informed that the govt had held meetings with all municipalities to discuss the Shigmo plans for their jurisdictions. He said, “The govt has advised to form a panel to organise the festival, and the decision has been left to the council. The MMC will receive a grant of Rs 10 lakh for Shigmo.”
Councillor Rupesh Mahatme objected to the MMC’s interference in the Shigmo organisation and claimed that it had never done that till date. He objected to councillor Avinash Shirodkar’s view of having a third person as the committee head.
