Since 1995 there has been only one person who has been in the Margao Municipal Council hot seat of chairperson for over two years. It was Kamilini Paigankar who served as MMC chairperson for four years seven months.
From 1970 to 1990 there were nine MMC chairpersons. While from 1990 to 1995 there were seven municipal administrators as the Council had suspended the practice of electing a chairperson during that period.
From 1970 to 1990, most of the chairpersons enjoyed tenure between one and two years. Only the first chairperson, Vasudev Sarmalkar, who was elected on November 4, 1970, remained in office for three years till November 30, 1973. Following Sarmalkar, the other chairpersons were Gajanan Gaundalkar (two terms), Milton Coutinho, Gopal Vaidya, Mathew D’Sa, Valmiki Faleiro, Ajit Hegde and Santosh Raiturkar.
