MARGAO: With all the markets shut in the morning Margao residents had a hard time on Sunday. However, the grocery stores at SGPDA market were opened after 10 am giving much relief to the people and to the shopkeepers whose stock was lying in their stores for weeks now.

SGPDA Chairman Wilfred alias Babashan D’Sa said the grocery stores were thrown open as the store keepers impressed him that since they have been closed since March 22 and their stock would go waste if not disposed and also because people were finding it difficult to find provisions in the markets that were not fully functional.

He disclosed that they would try to open the fruit and vegetable markets shortly. Incidentally the lone vendor who used to sell fruits and vegetables outside the retail market for the last couple of days was not allowed to do business today and a police constable was stationed where he used to sell.

The lone gate of New Market that used to be opened during the week was not opened today and at Gandhi market fruits and vegetables were sold till 6 am after which they were closed.

Being a Sunday not much traffic was seen on the streets.
