Meeting held to defuse tension at airport over taxi services

Taxi owners want rent-a-cab counter closed at airport; Threaten agitation if demand is not met

MARGAO: The Additional Collector South Goa held a meeting with the Taxi Owners at Goa International Airport and the rent-a-cab promoter over the ongoing tussle, on Tuesday. The taxi owners have however said that they would not allow the operations of rent-a-cab services at the airport and threatened to agitate if it is allowed.
The meeting was chaired by the Additional Collector Prasanna Acharya and attended by Nitesh Chodankar from the North Goa rent-a-cab association, representative of rent-a-cab at airport Pascal Fernandes and others.
Chodankar demanded that the Goa government stop the operation of the counter at the Airport and has warned of an agitation if the same is allowed. “The Airport Authority is not taking us into confidence and getting a new counter. The facility will kill all business of the taxis,” Chodankar said.
Chetan Kamat of the All Goa Taxi Owners Association appealed to the chief minister not to give the independent counter at the airport. “We are together now and the government shouldn’t try to create a divide,” Kamat warned.
Pascal Fernandes said, “The argument was that the RTO has not given authority. However, the same has been done before the tender. The additional notification will be taken in a short span of time.”
Additional Collector Acharya informed that the meeting was called to prevent law and order. “The legal issues raised at the meeting will be taken to the State Transport Authority and the Director of Transport and further steps will be taken according to their decisions,” said Prasanna.
