Meetings galore, but no solution yet to the Sonsoddo dump

The High Power Sub Committee of Sonsoddo meetings are being held at the Margao Municipal Council every alternate week but the dump keeps growing bigger with nothing concrete coming up

Meetings after meetings of the High Power Sub Committee of Sonsoddo are being held at the Margao Municipal Council every alternate week. Sadly there has been no solution or end to the discussion or beginning of work at the Sonsodo dump site. After the Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco spoke against the menace, now the Fatorda MLA, Vijai Sardesai, has said that the High Power Sub Committee meetings are increasingly becoming waste of time which is raising doubts of whether the much hyped committee is turning into a ‘Hype Powerless Sub Committee’ instead its real name.
The High Power Sub Committee met at the MMC on Tuesday and got briefed by the Consultant of the Bio Remediation Mr Ajay Jain who is from the Consultant Company Eco-pro Services. The meeting was on the backdrop of the last meeting held on October 4, where all the stakeholders, including the MLAs of the 3 constituencies (under which the sonsddo dump site falls) asked for a one to one session with the consultant Jain.
Accordingly, the consultant came and revealed his plans for the remediation. The entire discussion then went to the need of landfill site for the inert waste which will be extracted from the dump and got blocked there. The consultant has, meanwhile, asked for a landfill site within the property.
It may be recalled that the Fomento Green is preparing its landfill site and has already said no to the use of their site for remediation outcomes. The entire process of bio remediation has stopped at this juncture as the MMC is already facing scarcity of land. The meeting, which lasted hardly over 20 minutes, was, according to Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, highly inconclusive. After the meeting, Vijai spoke to the media and said, “Honestly speaking the HP(S)C meeting deliberations are a waste of time and I think nothing has gone ahead as expected.”
“As far as the discussion it is all hot air and nothing is going to be solved. But I am for a solution and it has to be quick,” Vijai added.
Meanwhile the Citizens For Sonsodo members met the Fatorda MLA and demanded that a part of the dump site be cleared and used as a landfill site. He further said, “The HPC and its solutions to my mind are too slow when the problem needs a quick stand to clear out the mess. The Chief Minister, who is the Chairman of the High Power Committee, has to step in here as he is in the capacity to solve the matter once and for all,” said Vijai.
There has been no solution for the Sonsodo issue even after having two continuous joint meetings of the High Power Sub-Committee of Sonsoddo. The meeting held on Tuesday has yet again only discussed the nitty-gritties of the Bio remediation at Sonsoddo and discussed on how and which site or land to be given to the Bio remediation contractor.
The MLA of Curtorim, Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, has already expressed his grief on Fomento Green, the concessionor of the Sonsoddo plant not taking responsibility to segregate waste at dump site. The existing dump is an eyesore to passersby and Citizens For Sonsodo has been fighting for the last two years to remove the existing dump by way of bio-mining. The GSUDA following discussions with Ajay Jain of Eco Pro Environmental Services, Indore, has awarded the Sonsoddo contract for bio mining and the remediation process to Black Berry Overseas Pvt Ltd, New Delhi. But the work of the same is now halted for want of an inert waste dumpsite.
