PONDA:  The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in race to grab the hot seat at the upcoming Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) chairperson’s election scheduled on August 28.

The chairperson’s post fell vacant following the resignation of Venktesh Naik.

The election has generated much interest among the Pondaites, who are curious to know as to who will win the election whether Ravi Naik’s son Ritesh will be the next chairperson following his entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party recently.

However, the Congress has no presence in the council as its three members including Ritesh Naik and two councillors joined the BJP recently.

In 15-member council there are seven Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party -backed councillors, but now with three councillors, who were backed by the Congress including Ritesh joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, the strength of the saffron party-backed councillors has risen to eight.

The Ponda Municipal Council election is not fought on party lines as any candidate can contest.
