Alert citizens at Khandepar caught a truck driver for dumping heaps of rotten watermelon stock off the NH; file complaint at police station and panchayat; challan issued

PONDA: Midnight dumping of truck load of rotten watermelons proved costly for an Andhra truck driver since he was fined Rs 2,500, in Ponda. The action came after alert citizens at Khandepar caught the truck driver for dumping heaps of rotten watermelon by the national Highway, at Kerya.

Complainant Rockey Dias said, while he was passing by he suspected that the truck driver was involved in some suspicious activity. On closer examination, it was noticed that he was unloading rotten water melons which he had brought from Mapusa.

This the driver did despite the “no garbage dumping” board at the site.

Following this Rockey filed a complaint at the Ponda Police Station, following which Police detained the truck driver and since Panchayat has power to issue fines, the Curti Khandepar Panchayat fined the truck driver for Rs 2500 under garbage disposal act. Rockey however said he was unhappy with the fine amount, saying it should be more. Sarpanch Sanjana Naik appreciated the alertness shown by Citizen Rockey Dias and for his initiative in alerting the police and the panchayat.
