Mining companies agree to meet demands of Sonshi locals

Refuse to release arrested locals; not to pay Rs 225 per day to sweepers

BICHOLIM: The mining companies in Sonshi-Sattari have agreed to fulfil most of the demands of the villagers but refused to release the arrested locals. 
At a joint meeting of representatives of villagers of Sonshi and mining company officials held in the office of Bicholim Deputy Collector on Thursday, the companies also refused to pay a remuneration of Rs 225 per day to women sweepers as they claimed that their work was not satisfactory.
The meeting which was held under the guidance of Bicholim and Sattari Deputy Collector Mahadev J Araundekar was attended by Valpoi Joint Mamlatdar, Saiesh Naik, PSI Yeshwant Mandrekar, company representatives and others.
The companies agreed to meet the demands for drinking water and doctors; they also agreed to withdraw their proposal to purchase 117 additional trucks and agreed to follow the speed limit. 
The deputy collector directed mining companies to take additional precautions such as controlling pollution, installing green nets in mining area, covering trucks with tarpaulin, controlling speed limit, deploying security at road crossing points and avoiding traffic congestions. The companies agreed to follow the directions of the deputy collectors.
