MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Thursday claimed that there is a move by the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) authorities to notify the coastal seashore from Cansaulim to Cavelossim as sand dunes and raised strong objection to the proposal.
Addressing the gathering at Colva at the inaugural function of Colva Tourist Taxi Counter, Alemao said, “The issue will be raised in a two-day Assembly session starting from October 18.
“It has been brought to my notice that one NGO and some social activists have demanded to notify the coastal belt near the sea from Cansaulim to Cavelossim as sand dunes. The business of locals and especially the tourism sector will be badly affected if it is notified,” said Churchill.
He claimed sand erosion does not mean the whole coastal belt is to be notified as sand dunes.
“There are some NGO who are now trying to destroy tourism in Goa, after raising voices against the mining industry. The NGO and social activists are always seen opposing the projects. Now, these social activists are forcing the concerned authorities to notify areas of the coastal belt as sand dunes,” he added.
He said, “They want to prove that areas where sand erosion has happened are sand dunes, which is totally false and misleading. “
Alemao feared no one will be allowed to put up shacks near the beaches, and even tourists will be deprived of enjoying the beauty of seashores.
He said, “I will be submitting his objection in writing to the Chief Minister in the next two days.”
The Benaulim MLA also urged the police to take stern action against the GoaMiles drivers if found to be without the batches.
“Police should take action against the GoaMiles drivers if they try to disturb the business of local taxi owners. I also urge the local taxi owners not to allow the GoaMiles in Colva, and if they are found taking away the business they should be caught and handed over to the police,” he said.
He also promised to support the Colva Beach Taxi Union against GoaMiles.
The MLA further said he is duty bound to work for the betterment of the people of his constituency.
Parish Priest of Colva Fr Simpliciano Fernandes, Savio Alemao, Warren Alemao, Taxi Union President Xavier Fernandes and others also attended the function.
