MAPUSA: Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar has urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to stop expansion of garbage treatment plant in his constituency.
Salgaonkar said that he has urged Sawant to stop the expansion of garbage treatment plant and the chief minister has assured to look into the matter.
“We have also bought to the notice of the Chief Minister that Standing Committee of the Parliament has found that this kind of plant is not feasible and also has huge costs. Taking into consideration the cost of the plant and new model, centralised plants in various parts similar to that of Varanasi if came up spending Rs 2 crore in each village can give the state-of-the-art quality plants where villages can treat their own garbage,” he said.
Salgaonkar further informed that entire water table of surrounding hill is contaminated and as per the test made in a primary health center of the ground water, it is found that this water is not suitable for human consumption due to the garbage plant which is dangerous and will force the people to leave the village.
On road development in Saligao, the MLA said that the tender of road costing Rs 135 crore floated through GSIDC has been cancelled.
“We have submitted a letter to the Chief Minister stating that Chogm Road and the road from Pilerne that serves the industrial estate and garbage plant is posing danger to the commuters and villagers since they are very narrow. The road is not proper and since hundreds of heavy trucks ply on these roads, it is posing danger to lives of the villagers,” he said.
