PANJIM: The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is all set for remediation of the existing garbage dump at the Sonsoddo waste site. The work, which will take atleast two years to complete, is expected to begin in next one week’s time.
The corporation proposes to set up Rs 100 crore solid waste treatment plant with capacity of 50 tonnes per day at the site.
Speaking to media persons, post chairing a meeting, Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo has sought cooperation from Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco and Margao Municipal Corporation (MMC) in providing an alternate site for dumping of the treated waste.
Lobo said that GWMC had issued tender for remediation of the existing garbage at 11 dumping sites in the State including at Sonsoddo.
“The tenders are open and we are in the process of issuing work order. Sonsoddo dump will be taken up first on priority,” the minister said.
He said that the corporation will mobilise all the machinery and send it at the site and will conduct inspection along with MMC.
“We will start the work within a week’s time. It will take atleast two years to remediate the entire waste. Over 2,35,000 cubic metres of waste is lying at the site and the new waste is still being dumped,” he said.
“We will start the work but if MMC wants the work to be done faster then they will have to provide us land for keeping refuse derived fuel (RDF) waste on one side and treated waste on the other side,” Lobo said as he urged the MLAs to extend their support and convince the people not to oppose.
He said that the MLAs will have to help the corporation in identifying the alternate site belonging to the government, since only the people in Raia are opposing to the dumping facility in the area identified in their village.
The minister said that unless the entire waste is treated, the corporation cannot go ahead and set up a plant for treatment of wet waste.
He said that the entire tender of remediation covering 11 sites is around of Rs 120-130 crore.
