VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Lavina D’Souza assured to take action against the municipal staff that illegally used a municipal vehicle and were caught red-handed by HCN. She will also issue a circular to all heads of departments to ensure that official vehicles are not misused and that strict action will be taken against those involved in such incidents.
On Sunday, a few municipality labourers were seen unloading several bags of scrap material from a compactor vehicle that is used to collect garbage from different wards. It was learnt that the labourers sold the scrap to a scrap yard in Shantinagar without the knowledge of municipal officers.
When questioned by an HCN reporter, they claimed to have collected scrap material from the MMC garbage treatment plant at Headland Sada, and such practice was very common and being followed by others as well. However, they had no reply as to why they used the compactor vehicle to transport the scrap.
When the issue was raised before the MMC, D’Souza promptly reported the issue to the Municipal Engineer Vishnu Naik, who revealed that the staff had no permission to use municipality vehicles and the same was done without the knowledge of senior MMC officials.
“Action against the concerned staff members will be initiated by issuing them a memo. A note will also be issued to all senior officials to ensure that such illegal use of municipal vehicles will not be tolerated henceforth. If anyone is caught, then serious action will be taken, including issuing a suspension order,” said D’Souza.
