MARGAO: Margao city fathers on Wednesday gave its stamp of approval for delimitation of municipal wards to remove glaring discrepancies and bring about uniformity in the composition of wards.
At the council meeting held on Wednesday, city fathers made a strong plea for the delimitation, saying the authorities should remove the uneven composition of municipal wards.
They suggested to the government that the new wards may be formed with minimum 2,500 voters by removing the existing imbalance. Councillor Sadanand Naik maintained that some of the wards are home to around 6,000-plus voters, while others have only 3,000. “This discrepancy should be rectified at the earliest by going in for delimitation”, he said.
He received support from his colleagues, Arthur D’Silva, Raju Naik and others with the council adopting a unanimous resolution requesting the government to take up the delimitation at the earliest. Chief Officer Deepali Naik said the council can only recommend delimitation to the government by attaching the census figures.
The council also approved a suggestion from the municipal administration to take up census of pet dogs as part of Mission Rabies and to take steps to tone up infrastructure at the dog shelter. Chief Officer Deepali Naik sought cooperation of the city fathers to take the survey to its logical conclusion and help in the Animal Birth Control program.
City fathers cried shame, shame over newspaper reports that the civic body has miserably failed on the revenue recovery front. They demanded action by the municipal administration, with Councillor Pratima Coutinho demanding to know the fate of the market survey conducted by the civic body last year.
The council also decided to make payment of wages to the municipal workers to rule out ghost workers drawing salaries.
