MMC finds itself embroiled in tender controversy, garbage plans halted

The tender issue seems to have severely affected the MMC’s garbage collection plans. The plan was the key to the municipality tackling the issue but this seems to have taken a back seat

Even as the deadlines for the
Margao Municipal Council have been crossed, the civic body’s plan to sort out
the garbage mess has been halted as it finds itself engulfed in the tender
controversy. The tender issue has affected the procurement of garbage transport
facilities which is the key for setting up the required infrastructure to help
the municipality tackle the rising garbage problems better and in a more
efficient manner.

The pending vigilance enquiry
in the whole procedure has left the whole tender process in a status quo. Now
the status quo has played out bad on the important issue of Garbage collection
and transport. The MMC had proposed a dumper and 2 rickshaws for the transport
of Garbage from the collection point to the plant but that plans seems to have
taken a back seat. The Chief Officer has, in the past suggested to take legal
consent to solve the problems created by the vigilance complaint. However, the
file has been sent and is hung up there. The civil society has yet again filed
a vigilance complaint and the process is now awaiting clearance from the
department.

The MMC is presently trying a
legal option to circumvent the vigilance complaint and get the tenders cleared
and get the needed equipments for the MMC. “The file has been sent to the legal
department for a suggestion to get a way out. However, we can only wait for the
reply,” said Chief Officer of MMC, Yashwant Tawde.

The Municipal Engineer, soon
after the MMC meeting had been to the DMA to find a way and check for
possibilities. The MMC also promised to have a special meeting to discuss the
same but the meeting hasn’t happened yet.
