VASCO: Garbage dumping site of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has become a safe haven for the strays cattle, dogs, eagles and crows.
These stray animals from nearby areas have made the garbage dumping site as their safe habitat. Locals passing through the road near MPT hospital have to face wrath of these stray animals that are hostile towards the passers-by.
The mixed waste which has been piled up at the waste treatment plant at Sada becomes the prime spot for these homeless animals for their source of food. Therefore, sources say now approximately 20 to 30 stray dogs and numerous stray animals, including cattle, are seen lying on the road near MPT hospital which is adjacent to the garbage dumping site.
When asked some women who go for evening walks near the dumping zone area, opined that there are high possibilities that these stray dogs might bite some locals who come for their walks in the mornings and evenings. “Also at night these dogs howl and make loud noises,” they said.
Few passers-by, on the condition of anonymity, said that there is a need to do something about the stray dogs as well as the cattle. “It has become almost difficult to pass through the road near the garbage dump site and it looks like as per the idiom ‘this road has already gone for the dogs’,” they said.
“The stray cattle obstruct roads at night, the stray dogs run behind bikes and passers-by. This may lead to accidents, dog bites, etc. MMC has failed to tackle the stray cattle and stray dog menace near the dumping site,” said another local.
There are no gates, the walls are damaged at several places which gives easy access to the stray animals to enter into the site and feast on the garbage waste. Sources from the MMC said that around 36 tonnes of total garbage is collected daily by them. “Around 8 tonnes of wet garbage is not treated at present but soon after the completion of model code of conduct the bio-gas plant of the capacity of 5 tonnes is likely to get operational wherein all the wet garbage will be treated,” said sources from MMC.
