VASCO: Following complaints from local residents as well as management of Mata Secondary School in Baina, Vasco over dumping of garbage from railway bogies close to Mata school premises, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday issued notice to Vasco railway station authorities.
According to the information by Mormugao Municipal Council  Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, the Council has been collecting garbage generated from the Vasco railway platforms on a day-to-day basis but since Railways did not come forward with the request to collect its garbage from the railway bogies, Mormugao Municipal Council  was not having any clue as to where Railways had been dumping their garbage collected from the bogies.
“Since it has been brought to my notice that the contractor appointed by the Vasco Railway Station officials has been dumping garbage from the bogies in the railway property but next to Mata School, thereby creating nuisance and discomfort to the people and more importantly to the students, I have issued notice to railways asking them to remain present before me on Wednesday so that issue can be addressed. At no cost we will allow Railways to dump their garbage in such manner, which caused inconvenience to the locals,” Fernandes said.
Meanwhile, when contacted, station manager of Vasco railway station P C Chacko informed that “At present all the garbage that is being collected from incoming trains is dumped inside our property but is cleared once in 15 days. Now, we have given clear instructions to the contractor to tie up with municipality and get the garbage cleared on a daily basis. I want to assure that henceforth there won’t be any dumping of garbage in that particular area”.
Commenting on the efforts taken by them to maintain cleanliness at Vasco Railway Station, he said, “We are focusing on maintaining cleanliness at railway station and that is why our railway station was awarded for cleanliness a year ago. In the recent case, the garbage issue was not inside the station area but outside the station area, far away from station. Still we don’t want people to face inconvenience and thus we have taken steps to ensure that no further dumping of bogie garbage takes place near the Mata School.”
