MARGAO: After getting no positive response from the bulk waste generators within its jurisdiction, the Margao Municipal Council will soon start an awareness programme to ensure compliance by the generators.

A plan is being chalked out to make sure the bulk waste generators are facilitated to dispose their own garbage at source.

Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar who held a meeting of his staff at MMC on Tuesday has decided to chalk out a programme to identify bulk waste generators. The MMC has found no cooperation from the bulk waste generators for finding a solution to the garbage they are generating.

The exercise that is planned is to make sure the garbage at the housing societies is collected, segregated and disposed off at source wherever possible.

“We will form a team of Councillors and Engineers and visit the housing societies on holidays. We will make them aware of the need for handling waste at source,” the chief officer said.

“For the societies which don’t have an option of at source disposal the MMC will find options to treat at source. At least 150 such bulk waste generators have been identified,” he said.

It is learnt that the government may issue a notification to make 50 kg and above as the criteria for any generator to be classified as a bulk waste generator.

“We have sent notices at least thrice to several of these societies and they have not turned up. The fact is that we are collecting their garbage now but the mandate is to dispose at source according to the Court rulings,” reminded Ajit Panchwadkar.

Meanwhile, the MMC plans to clean up the black spots and create awareness to the bulk generators.
