MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council is all set to start collecting segregated waste from each house in Fatorda constituency from November 1, with municipal staff tying up the loose end and chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai asserting that unless the work starts, the shortcomings will not be known.
MMC has engaged 45 new labourers to undertake the work in Ward Nos 1 to 7 and they will be paid wages of Rs 500 per day. However, Sanitary Inspectors and Sanitary Division have been given the overall responsibility in this regard. Sanitary inspectors have visited each and every house and have enlightened the people on garbage segregation. Besides, pamphlets have been distributed to the house owners explaining the disposal of wet and dry garbage into the bins.
Wet garbage will be collected every day, while dry waste will be collected only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This method will be adopted in Fatorda for a month and if successful, will be replicated in Margao.
CO Agnelo Fernandes said, “The council has also floated a tender asking for expression of interest to create awareness generation programme on garbage management and added that special stations have been planned at different places to dump dry waste, which can be collected by those who wish to get it recycled.
The awareness generation programme envisages designing and installing of boards, organizing workshops/seminars on garbage management, programmes in schools and colleges and video advertisements throughout the year besides having an article or interview published every month.
“We shall not get anywhere unless we start at least then we shall know what are our shortcomings and take corrective measures,” said the chairperson while pointing out that the council is in the process of purchasing one compactor and truck to deal with garbage.
“We also proposed to purchase another compactor and two trucks but that has to be approved at the council meeting,” she said while appealing to all people to lend their helping hand to this initiative.
