MARGAO: The house tax collection drive in Margao got a boost after Herald highlighted the Margao Municipal Council’s (MMC) efforts to collect outstanding taxes.
After Herald’s report on September 2, Margao residents who defaulted on their house tax started visiting the municipality to enquire about their dues.
Twenty-thirty people visit daily to pay their taxes. The fact that MMC will send demand notices from September to all defaulters has awakened the people to their pending payments to the municipality.
“We were amazed to see people coming to the tax section of MMC with the intention of paying their dues. The credit goes to Herald,” said a tax recovery officer.
“More than 20 people have turned up every day since the last week to pay their dues. We are also helping them transfer ownership of their premises to their names as many don’t know about it,” said tax collection official Dilip Khanapurkar.
MMC will soon begin a drive to collect commercial taxes, and its prime target will be traders operating without trade licences. It has successfully collected more than Rs 70 lakh in house tax from 15 wards.
