While the municipality had imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused person for bringing and storing waste at Chovoth, questions are being raised as to why the administration did not charge the party for lifting his waste in municipal trucks to the waste dumping site.
When this question was posed to MMC Chief Officer, Naveen S L, IAS by the media on Monday, the CO said the question of charging the party with garbage collection fees was not considered since he was already fined Rs 10,000 for the violation.
He, however, admitted that the civic body should have charged the party for using the municipal men and machinery to lift away the garbage. “Let me make it clear that the MMC will increase the fine if the party is found bringing garbage from Salcete coastal belt to Margao”, Naveen said.
Many an eyebrow was raised in the corridors of the civic body over the failure to charge the party with garbage collection fees as it feared that hotel waste from Salcete coastal belt may repeatedly find its way in Margao if the culprits are allowed to go scot free.
“The fine should act as a deterrent to anyone contemplating to dump waste in Margao. Any laxity will only bring in tons of waste from the coastal belt to the city”, remarked a Margao city father in the know.
