PANJIM: After a long deficit spell, the monsoon activities are set to pick up from Friday and will go on till the first week of July. Several parts of Goa on Thursday, however received heavy rains bringing in much needed respite from soaring heat.
Goa has suffered over 73 per cent rainfall deficit in the first 22 days of south west monsoon season. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa has predicted that conditions are becoming favourable for active monsoon currents.
In a bulletin issued, IMD has said that rainfall activities are likely to be in excess from June 23 onwards and till the first week of July. After almost five day long delay, the southwest monsoon had onset over Goa coast on June 10. Since then, till date, the State recorded almost 176.8mm of rainfall, as against the normal discharge of 641 mm of rains.
In 2022, the June month had ended with nine per cent deficit rains and had picked up in the month of July. Before that in 2020 and 2021 season, June had reported surplus rains.
