PANJIM: The monsoon in Goa for the month of June has come quite close to its normal with the deficit being 14 per cent at 77.08 cm during the month.
As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Centre, the State received 77.08 cms of rainfall from June 1 – 30 as compared to 89.85 cm, a 14 per cent departure from the normal rainfall expected during the month.
However, in comparison to 2018 the difference of the rainfall is higher. In June 2018, Goa received 99.47 cm of rainfall in comparison to 89.85 cm of rainfall, an increase of 11 per cent from the normal. In comparison to 2018, the June 2019 rainfall is a 22 per cent deficit.
A week ago the State had received almost 50 per cent less rainfall as compared to the normal. The Panjim observatory had recorded 25.8 cm of rainfall against the normal of 64.3 cm, which was 38.5 cm less from the normal. However, the spell of rainfall over the last two weeks has reduced the deficit largely.
Stating that the observatory’s predictions had come true, IMD – Goa Director, Dr Krishnamurthy Padgalwar said, “The onset of monsoon was delayed by two weeks and therefore until last week we had deficit rainfall. Since the last 10 days we had an active monsoon and due to this the below normal rain which was more than 30 per cent has now come down to 14 percent. In the beginning itself IMD Goa had predicted that the rainfall for this month will be 10 per cent below normal and we are happy that it is very close.”
