Mopa Airport to start operations from Sept 1

PANJIM: With nearly 98 per cent work of the Greenfield International Airport at Mopa being completed, the airport is expected to commission full-fledged from September 1, this year. 

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that the airport will be inaugurated sometime between August 15 and 30, depending upon the appointment by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Nearly 98 per cent work of the airport is completed. Certification process and testing the airport for smooth landing and takeoff will commence soon. The GMR Airports Ltd intends to commence the airport full-fledged from September 1, this year,” Sawant said. 

The Chief Minister was speaking at an event held to hand over the compassionate appointment letters and Offers of Appointment to beneficiaries of GMR, the project proponent. 

Sawant said that so far, more than 500 Goans youth are employed at Mopa Airport project site, while there are many who have got the appointment letters. 

“In addition, the GMR will appoint 500 more youth in the next six months,” he added.
