The power cuts have been causing considerable inconvenience and discomfort to the local populace of Calangute and Baga, especially in the searing heat. The heat becomes unbearable especially at peak evening hours when there are power cuts, forcing people to move outdoors.
According to the electricity officials, the frequent power cuts are due to increased consumption and loads from guest houses and hotels, in the holiday season.
The power cuts occur mostly on weekends when the room occupancy is full and the power situation returns to normal on Monday.
Calangute Zilla Panchayat member Shawn Martins received numerous telephone calls due to frequent power supply cuts. Martins took the initiative to resolve the issue and called on the assistant engineer, Electricity department at Calangute, Chandran, who said that . there is tremendous increase in power consumption load due to arrival of tourists for weekend stay in Calangute. The increased load consumption is forcing the main line to trip very frequently. Chandran said the guest house owners and starred hotels should make use of the their generators from 6 pm to 11 pm, besides getting additional load sharing from Arpora and Candolim sub-power stations. Chandra assured that there would be less power cuts by Monday.”
