VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has now fixed the fees for registration of dogs in various categories from Rs 200 to Rs 300.
To encourage the adoption of desi breed (local) dogs, the council has fixed the registration fees to as low as Rs 50.
It may be recalled that the Council had recently announced compulsory registration of pet dogs to reduce the stray menace due to abandoning of dogs by people.
“The registration of dogs is crucial with Goa being a state of animal lovers. 71% of dogs are owned by the people in rural areas and 59% in urban areas. The registration of dogs aims at reducing abandoning of these animals and to stop killing of dogs. Since the compulsory dog registration is followed by many municipalities across country even we decided to implement the same with some fixed fees,” Chief Officer MMC Agnelo Fernandes said.
“For hybrid dogs, the registration fees will be Rs 300, Rs 200 for small hybrid dogs and Rs 50 for desi breed (local) dogs. This is to encourage the adoption of desi dogs. Also the municipality will provide a registration numbered collar with a fee of Rs 50. The pet owner should provide an undertaking to get their dogs vaccinated and sterilised within 6 months. Applicants should fill up an application form and an undertaking form and two photos of the dog and submit the same to the municipality. The age for registration of the dog is 3 months and above,” Fernandes informed.
“The date of commencement for dog registrations will be intimated shortly. For vaccination, the pet owners can utilise the free vaccination done by Mission Rabies or veterinary hospitals or a private vet. For sterilization, they can approach PFA, Vasco or private veterinary clinics. Mission Rabies will be providing technical support to the municipalities and education to the pet owners on the benefits of vaccination, sterilisation and registration. This is as per the Government Notification issued under sections of Goa Daman and Diu Municipalities Act 1968 Act (No 7 of 1969),” he added.
