Mormugao Council stops railway double-tracking works at Maimollem

Fear ongoing work of constructing a new bridge by the SWR could block the nullah which would result in flooding during the monsoon

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council on Saturday stopped the ongoing railway double-tracking works at Maimollem following apprehensions that it could block the major nullah and cause flooding during the monsoon.

The stop work order was issued after Mormugao Chairperson Leo Rodrigues and ward councillor Girish Borkar held a joint inspection at the site.

Rodrigues said that the ongoing work of constructing a new bridge by the South Western Railways (SWR) could block the nullah flowing nearby and could flood during monsoon.

Due to this reason, the municipal council asked the SWR authorities to stop the work till monsoon subsides.

Ward councillor Girish Borkar said that  Maimollem was in the low lying area and could face flooding during monsoon if the nullah gets blocked and stops the natural flow of water.

He said that the railways have been asked to keep the ongoing work on hold and resume after the monsoon.

Borkar said that the railway authorities were asked to expedite their works but they delayed and the municipality cannot take any risk during monsoon.

According to Rodrigues and Borkar, the SWR authorities have agreed to keep the work on work and restart it after monsoon. The railways have also agreed to deepen the nullah and make it broad, they said.
