Mormugao municipality to evict hawkers encroaching footpaths

Vasco: The Mormugao Municipality will take strict action against road side vendors illegally occupying footpaths from Monday, warned MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues. However, vendors doing business at the renovated market have raised questions as to whether the drive will be seriously implemented, as it seemed to be an eyewash in the past. The traditional vendors recently shifted to the renovated market are suffering losses as roadside vendors have snatched a considerable portion of their business.

Chairperson Rodrigues along with local councillor Shami Salkar inspected the market. A few vendors found to be  encroaching various places in the market, were directed to stick to the places allotted to them and not move elsewhere. All roadside vendors were allotted independent spaces at recently renovated old fish market, while a few others were shifted to makeshift fish market shelters erected on the Dev Damodar Trust’s land. A few vendors had returned to their previous places, citing a decline in business.

Citizens had raised eyebrows after the vendors were found encroaching the roadsides despite exclusive market places made available to them.

The Chairperson has warned these vendors of fines if found encroaching the roadside again.
