MARGAO: The land acquired by the Margao Municipal Council for the rehabilitation of displaced gadda owners at the Old market has virtually become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Rain water is stagnating in the acquired land since the last few days, with no outlet for the water to drain. Water logging not only offers a perfect breeding site for mosquitoes, but the rotting water is emanating foul odour.

While passers-by and citizens have complained of foul odour, the sorry state of affairs has failed to spur the civic body to act and work out a way for draining out the stagnant water. While the civic body had floated a tender to clean up drainages and storm water drains across the city, nothing has been done to ensure flow of stagnant water from the triangular plot of land.

When contacted, Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar admitted that the Old market triangle poses a health hazard on account of water accumulation, and hastened to add that the water should be drained out either by pumping or creating a way before it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The relatively dry weather in the last two days, sources say, may further aggravate the situation.
