PANJIM: Raising grave concern over the spree of fatal accidents being reported in the State, Director of Transport Rajan Satardekar on Thursday claimed that more than 50 per cent of the accidents are caused due to ‘human error’.
“Statistically more than 50 per cent causes (of accidents) are because of human error…50-60 per cent which also includes self-accidents. Be cautious, leave early for your destination and don’t be in a hurry. And if you feel drowsy don’t drive,” Satardekar said.

He claimed that statistics available with the department shows that accidents occur during evenings when people return back home from their workplaces.
“Mostly peak time of accidents is between 6 pm and 9 pm. We have digitised road accidents investigation. We are using an integrated road accident database since February 1, 2022,” he said.
Reacting to the incidents where heavy vehicles have fallen victim to the Smart City works and got trapped after roads caved in, the Transport Director said that the respective contractors executing the work should deploy traffic marshalls and regulate the traffic.
“It is the contractor who has to see that people don’t venture into risky areas. At work sites, vehicles shouldn’t be allowed, if it is allowed due caution has to be taken by the contractor,” he said.
