PORVORIM: In a bid to honour two Olympians from Aldona, efforts are now afoot to name two roads running parallel to the Quitula Grounds in Aldona after its two Olympians, Walter D’Souza and Mary D’Souza Sequeira.
The new executive committee of the Quitula Sports Club (QSC) has decided to move a resolution before the next gram sabha in this regard. The QSC decision comes barely two weeks after Mary D’Souza, who hails from Quitula-Aldona was conferred with the prestigious Dhyan Chand Award by the Central government in recognition of her lifetime contribution in the field of sports.
Confirming this, QSC Vice President Felix Da Cruz told Herald that a decision to move the resolution at the next village gram sabha had been taken at the first meeting of the new QSC managing committee on Friday.
“The QSC also decided to honour Mary D’Souza, when she visits Goa next,” said Da Cruz.
Besides being a triple medallist in athletics at the Asian Games, Mary D’Souza along with Walter D’Souza represented the country in hockey.
Meanwhile, the new managing committee elected for the year 2013-14 comprises Joao Rosario Fernandes (President), Felix Da Cruz (Vice President), Blaise D’Cruz (General Secretary), Michael Fernandes (Joint Secretary), Vishwanath Chodankar (Treasurer), Mathias Pereira (Joint Treasurer), Nelson Da Cruz (Social Secretary), Paul Alphonso (Joint Social Secretary), James Gonsalves (Joint Social Secretary), Avinash Misquita (Joint Social Secretary), Tome Fernandes (Sports Secretary), Sebestian Menezes (Joint Sports Secretary), Uday Prabhu (Joint Sports Secretary) and Francis Lobo (Joint Sports Secretary).
Members in the QSC committee are Ulhas Nagvenkar, Chagas Dias, Pantaliao Alphonso, Shamba Sathelkar, Anthony D’Souza and Jose Caridade Fernandes, while the Trustees are Aurobindo Couto and Hector Fernandes.
