PANJIM: A day after resigning from Congress, Urfan Mulla switched his loyalty to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reposing his faith that the saffron party will ensure the contentious Citizenship Law does not affect the minority community.
“I am confident that BJP will ensure Muslims do not face any problems due to the CAA and NRC. BJP is capable to protect interests of the minority community,” Mulla said at his induction ceremony held in the party’s head office in Panjim on Wednesday.
The Congress former leader along with his supporters officially joined the BJP in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar, party president Sadanand Shet Tanavade and others.
Addressing reporters, Mulla assured that he would continue to work for his community. “We will not switch over to any other party once we are here in BJP. If there is any injustice meted out to our community, my party (BJP) and I will work on it and resolve all the issues,” he added.
Mulla lashed out at his former party for lack of organisation, lack of direction, lack of ideology and lack of leadership. He reiterated that Congress has no unity with infighting prevalent for personal gains.
Kavlekar added that Congress should introspect on reasons its leaders are quitting the party while alleging internal differences.
