VASCO: It was constructed to provide better parking facilities for over 500 vehicles, but the Multi Level Car Parking (MLCP) at the New International Terminal Building (NITB) at Dabolim Airport is now embroiled in a controversy, amid claims that the project could pose a serious security threat to the flights.
A day ahead of the proposed commencement of operations at the NITB, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida claimed that the CISF had described the MLCP as a “security threat”.
“Since the MLCP is in close vicinity to the parking bay of the flights, the CSIF has termed it as security threat, as any anti-social element can cause damage to the aerobridges and the parking bay on the tarmac,” stated Almeida.
“The MLCP will be a white elephant, as it will be rendered useless and the airport authority should identify an area and construct another MLCP at the earliest,” said Almeida.
Supporting the concerns of the CISF and Almeida, a highly placed source at Dabolim airport admitted that MLCP would pose a security threat not only to civilian flights, but to the naval flights as well.
“It is not the CISF which has claimed the MLCP is a ‘security threat’. Incidentally, it is the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India which has declared the MLCP as a security threat, as it is in close vicinity to the aircraft,” clarified the source.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India has reportedly sent a communiqué to the airport authorities, highlighting the danger of the MLCP.
