PANJIM: The Crime Branch on Friday rearrested a 2005 murder convict who had fled after breaking prison in 2007.
The accused Jackson Dadel, resident of Bhatlem, Panjim, was evading arrest for last 15 years and was traced in West Bengal. Dadel and accused Rudolph Gomes were convicted by Additional Sessions Court, Panjim in the year 2007 for committing murder of deceased Godwin D’Silva, a resident of Altinho, Panjim, at Caranzalem by stabbing him with knife causing his death.
Even before the sentence could be awarded in 2007, accused Dadel and Gomes along with 12 other accused persons broke open the gates of judicial lock up, Margao, assaulted the jail guards, confined them in the lock up and escaped from the jail. They were booked for the offence at Margao Town Police Station.
A team comprising Crime Branch proceeded to Digha Town of Purba Medinipur District of West Bengal, which is 200 kilometres away from Kolkata and apprehended accused Dadel. He was evading arrest for the last 15 years. He had changed his name to Rajeev Kashap and was working as a front office manager for a hotel in Digha Town. The date of his escape that is September 16 was adopted by him as a date of birth after his escape. The accused has been handed over to Margao Police Station for further legal action.
