Murder convict sentenced for life

MARGAO: Additional Sessions Judge I Edgar Fernandes on Tuesday sentenced Dular Munda from Jharkhand to life imprisonment for murdering Sachin Oraon whom he assaulted with a danda in Benaulim. The convict is also slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which to undergo further imprisonment for three months.
On February 12, 2017 at around 7.30 pm, Dular hit Sachin while they were sitting in the fields at Vaddie in Benaulim and thereafter fled from the scene. He was nabbed on April 27, 2017 and thrashed by the public as he was caught breaking window panes and damaging cars.
Police Inspectors Filomeno Costa and Satish Gawde investigated the case with the later being transferred within a few days of the incident. Public Prosecutor Subash Dessai said the testimony of Dr Sunil Chimbalkar from the Forensic Department and the confessional statement recorded by Sarojini Sardinha helped in a big way to get the conviction.
Sarojini Sardinha, who is now the Director of Prosecution, had recorded Dular’s confessional statement when he was battling for life in the hospital after the thrashing he received from the public. Adv Ignatius Dias represented the accused in the matter.
