PANJIM: Questioning the haste in pitching Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before the 2024 parliamentary elections, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Sunday alleged that the BJP-led ruling dispensation at the centre wants to target the Muslim community through UCC.
“Almost whole Muslim community is opposing UCC except those few so-called nationalist Muslim with RSS. It is not only Muslim organisations, Sikhs, Christians and Tribals are also opposing UCC, still the government is adamant,” said JIH Vice President Professor Mohammed Saleem Engineer.
“We have written to the Law Commission asking what urgency it has of talking of UCC at this juncture when elections are very close. We have pointed out that just 18 months back 21st Law Commission had recommended that UCC is not desirable, nor needed. So, why is the government not considering the opinion of its own Commission? It was the same government which had appointed that commission, why has it been reinitiated under the new Commission? This shows clearly what their (government’s) intentions are,” he added.
Prof Saleem Engineer alleged that the Law Commission is acting on behest of the BJP-government for fulfilling their agenda adding that he questioned as to how the Commission can seek suggestions and objections without providing UCC draft.
“We have been living without UCC for 75 years and we have had no problems. I think this government has a problem because we don’t have any problem. We feel UCC is aimed at polarising the society and to target Muslim community because targeting Muslim community will give the ruling dispensation a political dividend and divert the attention of people from the important issues of our country that need to be attended to urgently,” he said.
