MARGAO: Mystery shrouds the death of an eight-year-old minor school girl, Sathya Vaishnavi, who died in a private hospital at Cuncolim late last night after being admitted for abdominal pain.
As parents of the deceased girl have suspected negligence, Cuncolim police have written a letter to the Dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, to form a panel of doctors to conduct the post-mortem examination.
Cuncolim PI Ram Asare said that the girl was admitted to the hospital after she had complained of abdominal pain. He said the body of the girl has since been shifted to Hospicio for the autopsy. “I have written a letter to the GMC Dean to constitute a panel of doctors for the post-mortem examination since the parents have suspected negligence”, PI Asare said.
The girl’s father, who is a doctor by profession, has wondered why the private hospital kept her daughter’s body in the hospital for more than 12 hours when it has no mortuary facility.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, however, demanded to know why the girl’s body was not shifted to Hospicio mortuary soon after her death. “The girl had walked into the hospital on Wednesday and expired by midnight. But her body was not shifted to the Hospicio mortuary immediately. In fact, the body has been shifted from the hospital to Hospicio after 12 long hours”, he said, while demanding justice to the minor girl.
Reginaldo had disclosed plans to write a letter to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to ensure that major private hospitals are mandated to make arrangements for mortuary.
Meanwhile, the Centre Head of the private hospital Dr Anuj Tiwari has said that the girl was admitted to the hospital under Sr Consultant Paediatrician with complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting. “She was diagnosed with food poisoning, acute gastroenteritis and the line of treatment was planned and started accordingly. Suddenly in the late evening hours her condition deteriorated despite all the treatment and medical management and the patient was transferred to ICCU. Despite all treatment and resuscitative measures the patient could not be revived,” Dr Anuj said in a statement released this evening.
